Cheese Producers News: Northeastern U.S. Cheese Market Overview
Cheese producers in the Northeastern U.S. are reporting steady to lower milk volumes, with some members of the industry dealing with the impacts of localized rain and flooding. Production levels have been affected, but some cheese plant managers have been able to reallocate milk intended for Class III manufacturing to other areas not as heavily impacted.
The national retail report last week revealed 6-8 ounce packages to be the most popular cheese product on offer, with an advertised average price of $2.44. Meanwhile, market prices for cheese blocks on industry cash exchanges closed at $1.3525 last Wednesday, then rose to $1.5000 at the time of this report’s publishing. In the Northeast, wholesale prices for cheddar and muenster are up from last week by $0.0425 while process cheese prices are down by $0.0325, with Grade A Swiss prices remaining the same.
